About This Show

Opening Reception: Thursday March 14, 6:00 - 9:00PM with performance at 7:30PM

Desplazamiento is a site-specific installation by Stephanie Mercedes that reimagines the waters of Rio de la Plata during the Argentine dictatorship. During this period, approximately 30,000 people "disappeared", many of which were dropped into the river in "death flights" so that the bodies would never be discovered. In this art exhibition, Mercedes uses photographic negatives from this period to symbolically recreate events so that they may never be forgotten.

Stephanie Mercedes is an Argentine/American artist who, through intervening into archives, large scale installations and musical performances activates missing violent histories. Her work reflects on the politics of forgetting and memory. She has exhibited, performed and lectured at the Smithsonian, Queens Museum and Bronx Museum and funded through Open Society Foundation and Light Works. She is based in Washington D.C.
