About This Show

Opening Reception: Thursday August 29, 6:00PM - 9:00PM with artist lecture at 7:30PM

"What is Withheld" features paintings and sculptural installations by Yvette L. Cummings. The work explores the complicated path of youth, beauty, and femininity, through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor. Cummings also uses colorful and patterned environments to represent the repetitive nature of memory and showcase how camouflage can signify the ways that people reveal their true selves. In contrast, the figures staring out from the paintings are meant to challenge how society views adolescence and the expectations that come with beauty.

Yvette L. Cummings received her MFA from the University of Cincinnati and currently teaches at Coastal Carolina University.
